Illness

DENGUE FEVER IN PHUKET Even the most prepared traveller can't be protected against a disease for which there's no vaccination. Unknowingly bitten by a Dengue Fever carrying mosquito while at a Muay Thai training camp in Thailand, Casey brushes off the first signs of illness thinking he'll shake it like any other bug. Even his mother, Lesley, encourages him to "suck it up" and work through it, not knowing her son is seriously ill. Barely mustering enough strength to travel to Phuket, Casey visits a doctor who urges him to go to the hospital. Fearful of being in a strange hospital in a strange country, Casey refuses. Luckily for his sake, Lesley travels to Thailand to check on her son. Walking into his hotel room she sees how much weight he's lost in just two weeks-she knows something is seriously wrong. He's immediately taken to hospital and receives a powerful cocktail of antibiotics to try to fight the disease without a cure. CHOLERA IN KOLKATA Ravaged by an ancient disease, a teacher finds herself alone and scared in a foreign land. Jen travelled to Kolkata to teach as a volunteer at an orphanage, immersing herself in the culture and everyday life. Each day she taught, cooked, and ate with the children. Everyone in the area drew their water from the same well, boiled it, and used it for cooking, cleaning and washing. While making trips to the well for water, Jen realizes the conditions appear even less hygienic than she first thought-animals are everywhere, feces all around. One day Jen notices the dishes they're about to eat from are not dry and wonders which water they've been washed with. Hesitant, but not wanting to offend, she takes her plate and eats her meal with the children as usual. Hours later she's violently ill. Days later, she's unable to even get out of bed. The woman from the orphanage takes her to a clinic, but Jen refuses an IV and is afraid to eat. After running tests, the doctor sends her away with antibiotics. Jen continues to decline and soon becomes delirious...hallucinating, writing feverishly in a journal, and calling family and friends back home. Only then does the doctor determine she has Cholera, a bacterial infection Jen is shocked to learn still exists.

Mugged

NICARAGUA HOLD-UP Kashlee and her friends captured different memories than bargained for in Nicaragua. Trading a frigid Saskatchewan winter for a tropical stay at a sustainable farm, Kashlee and her photographer friend Scott wanted to take some scenic photos before heading back to Canada. After an hour spent relaxing and taking pictures on a deserted beach, Kashlee and Scott walk back to the SUV to join the others when figures rush out of the trees. Assuming at first they're local children, Kashlee thinks little of it, but something triggers Scott's instincts and he quickly tosses his expensive camera equipment into the nearby bushes and pushes Kashlee to the ground. Realization dawns too late for their friends at the vehicle and they're forced face down into the sand by bandana clad attackers wielding a machete and a handgun. Unable to escape detection, one attacker with the machete soon comes after Kashlee and Scott. Frozen, Kashlee can't move a muscle as the man yells at them to hand over their pack still on Scott's back, waving a machete in their faces. TANZANIA TAXI THEFT A honeymoon in Africa turns into a nightmare for Suzanne and her husband. After enjoying a two-week private safari, Suzanne and her husband spend their final days in Dar es Salaam on their own before flying back home. While walking around the city on their last day, a young man approaches them and offers a taxi ride. Needing a ride to the airport that evening, they arrange to meet him across the street from their hotel later. At the appointed time, they load their luggage and get into the waiting taxi. Not surprised by two men in the front seat, the couple is however puzzled by a stop for gas minutes later, when the driver asks them for money. Handing over five dollars, they continue one their way after the gas is dispensed-only to be stopped a short distance later. Two men sandwich Suzanne and her husband in the back seat of the taxi-one dressed in a police uniform. Things go from bad to worse as the officer accuses them of drug possession and threatens jail unless they each pay one thousand dollars. With nowhere near that amount of money on them and discovering they're nowhere near the airport, Suzanne and her husband are quickly running out of options.

LEVELED IN LIMA Tour Guide, Gary, faces his own violent end to a trip to Peru, and learns a valuable lesson the hard way. Rewarding himself with a few days of rest and relaxation in Lima after leading a tour, Gary breaks his own rules and hails a taxi on the street to continue a night of celebrating in a downtown district. Robbed

HOTEL HEIST Kristin and Siya learn a valuable lesson. Moving off the tourist grid isn't always the best choice, and a little research goes a long way. Wandering off the beaten path, the couple finds their way to a Kolkata hotel without another tourist in sight. Their eagerness to live as locals is shattered when Siya awakes to discover they've been robbed-while they were sleeping. Losing their possessions was one thing, but having their privacy violated and safety compromised was the big concern. Local police immediately act to investigate, and the hotel denies any involvement. BARCELONA BEACH BURGLARY The excitement of spontaneity isn't worth the price for four friends in Barcelona. Deciding to take their chances rather than pre-booking a place to stay, Kat, Hanna and two other friends arrive in beautiful Barcelona and search the city's hostels for vacancies. Things look good when they find a hostel, but their rooms won't be ready for a while. Rather than leaving their valuables in an unsecured room, they head to the beach with all their belongings to kill time. While everyone else swims, Hanna dozes off while watching the bags. She wakes to discover a bag is missing-Kat's things have been stolen...her clothes, cameras, and passport are gone. Jumping up in a panic, Hanna and the others search the beach, but come up empty-handed.

Violence on the Road

SHOT IN CHIANG MAI Quick thinking, a calm demeanor, and medical training save a life in Thailand. Liz and Eric set out from their luxurious hotel in Chiang Mai to start a camping and trekking adventure in the jungle. Their songthaew ride goes from bumpy to bloody when a shot rings out and Eric complains of a pain in his side. Liz, an anesthesiologist, discovers he's been shot. By the time they arrive at the hospital, Eric is in bad shape. Liz quickly switches from wife to doctor mode. She helps with his treatment alongside the trauma doctors. Police arrive to investigate, treating Liz as their first suspect. She's interrogated while her husband clings to life. Liz is quickly cleared of suspicion, but Eric's life continues to hang in the balance. The next few weeks are a blur. HELD-UP IN HONDURAS Victoria manages to fend off her attacker with whatever she has at hand. Vacationing on the island of Roatan, Victoria makes a trip to the mainland to shop. An accomplished violinist, she has taken to teaching some of the local island kids how to play. Victoria needs a new bow. A few hours in the city and she's collected everything she needed, so she heads to the waiting taxi to drive back to the ferry dock. Stowing her bags in the trunk, she only keeps her bow with her in the backseat as the taxi gets underway. A few blocks later, the driver makes an unexpected stop and picks up a man from the side of the road-ignoring Victoria's protests. The man suddenly pulls out a knife and violently stabs Victoria. Fighting for her life, she eventually manages to unlock her door and makes a run for it. Having been stabbed five times in the back she soon collapses, using her violin bow for support. The attacker still in pursuit is determined to finish her off. Victoria's survival instincts kick-in. She uses her bow to defend herself.

Accidents on the Water

SPEEDBOAT STRIKEOUT A life altering accident convinces a couple on their second honeymoon that work coverage is not enough. Third party travel insurance is non-negotiable. Neetin and Kaveeta land in Punta Cana, excited for a week of rest and reconnection. A relaxing morning on the water quickly turns bad when the sound of a motorboat grows louder. Neetin looks up to see the nose of a boat careening towards them. Before he can get a full warning out Kaveeta is struck as he's thrown from the boat. In and out of consciousness when she's brought to shore, Kaveeta is quickly taken to hospital. Hospital staff tell Neetin his company's insurance is not accepted. He needs to come up with ,000 before they'll treat his wife. Precious time is lost as Neetin makes calls. At last he's able to come up with the money. Kaveeta's severe concussion is finally treated and she's moved to ICU to be closely monitored. Things go from bad to worse when the following day brings a demand for another ,000 for treatment to continue. Not only that, the tour company informs Neetin if they can't make the scheduled flight they'll be stuck there for two weeks...on their own dime. UP THE RIVER Two friends on a guided trip to Laos gamble with their safety when they are too proud to listen to an expert. Taking a break from the party atmosphere of their group, Amanda and Erika set out to spend a half-day enjoying the beauty of nature on a kayak adventure. Against the stern warning of their kayak guide, they decide to navigate the waters alone. Pride quickly turns to fear as the waters become too tough to handle. Before they know it they're wedged between a rock and tree, hanging on for dear life as water rushes into their kayak. Following their instincts, Amanda and Erika decide to separate. Erika lets go and lets the current take her-hopefully to a safe landing where she will be more visible to rescuers; while Amanda clings to a tree hoping the rest of their group soon realizes they're missing.

Lost In Malawi

LOST IN MALAWI Three friends vow to never again venture into unknown mountain territory near dusk. Hiking with friends during a break from volunteering in Malawi, Claire realizes she's holding the others back with her slower pace. She offers to wait on the trail for them to return and all hike back together. As Claire waits she begins hearing noises in the bush. Turning she spots a few baboons nearby. At first she's intrigued and delighted at seeing wildlife up close. She soon realizes she's in danger as more baboons emerge to surround her. The animal noises become louder and more aggressive as dusk draws nearer, Claire knows her only choice is to run down the mountain alone. Running as fast as she can to beat the setting sun, she quickly loses the path. Off in the distance she finally sees the lights of a local village and makes her way to the elders who give her directions back to town. Back with the family she's staying with she learns her friends haven't come back yet. LOST AT SEA Floating aimlessly off the coast of a beautiful cluster of islands seems idyllic at first to Susie and her friends. A boating adventure along the coast of Indonesia turns dire when Susie and her friends are woken by their guide and asked if any of them have a compass. They discover they're surrounded by water-nothing but ocean for as far as the eye can see. Making things worse, the radio Susie confirmed was on board was not a two-way radio...with no way to communicate realization sets in that they're truly lost at sea. Things don't seem bad at first-the sun is shining; the company is wonderful. However, the danger of their situation becomes clear when the captain tells them resources must be used sparingly, as they don't know how long they'll need to last. Snapping into action, the group recalls a high school science class where they learned to make a compass. A few pieces from the radio and a water bottle later, they hand a spinning needle facing due south to their captain. From that point it's up to him to navigate them out of trouble.

Troubled Waters

SHARK ATTACK An attack in Mexico leaves a lasting impression on Nicole, creating an unlikely advocate. Wading in shallow water along a sandy beach, Nicole hears men on jet skis shouting at her in Spanish. Not understanding what they're saying, she thinks she's in their way. Attempting to move out of their path she feels a bump against her leg. To her horror realizes a shark is attacking her. The shark takes a large chunk of flesh from her thigh and takes her arm into its mouth. A "fight or flight" instinct kicks in and she punches at the shark, likely saving her life. Nicole is pulled out of the water, and once on shore she uses her nursing skills to instruct strangers how to help her until paramedics arrive. Doctors at the local hospital reattach the bit of flesh to her thigh and save her arm. However after being airlifted back home and rushed into surgery, the damaged piece of thigh has to be removed. It wasn't cleaned properly and infection has already set in. The previous efforts to save her arm were in vain. Doctors have to remove it, leaving Nicole to discover a new normal. NO THRILL IN NEGRIL A dream vacation makes the wrong splash when Rachael can't move after hitting the water. While soaking up the sun in Jamaica with her family, Rachel takes part in an adventure of a lifetime-the cliff diving excursion that's a must-do in Negril. After successfully completing the first two of three jumps-at ten and twenty feet-an excited and confident Rachel is ready for the final thirty-foot leap. The minute she leaves the cliff's edge, she knows something is different this time-something small, but something bad. She hits the water and immediately feels pain, then nothing. Unable to move on her own, Rachel is brought back to shore. Inaccessible by ambulance, her rescuers place her onto a backboard and load her into a taxi. She's driven down the mountain road to the hospital.
